Jurij Konstantinowitsch Kusmenko ( Russian Юрий Константинович Кузьменко ; born October 27, 1941 in Lipowka , USSR ) is a Russian linguist and Scandinavian . He was professor for Scandinavian linguistics at the Humboldt University in Berlin.

Life

Kusmenko studied Germanic Philology at the University of Leningrad between 1960 and 1965 . Michail Iwanowitsch Steblin-Kamenski, a German scholar, was among his teachers . After his state exam Kusmenko was a graduate student at the Institute of Linguistics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in Leningrad , where he in 1970 with a thesis on the history of affricates in Swedish doctorate . At the Academy of Sciences in 1984 he also wrote his habilitation thesis on the phonological evolution of the North Germanic languages .

From 1975 until his appointment to the Northern Europe Institute of the Humboldt University in Berlin , Kusmenko was head of the seminar for diachronic phonology of the Germanic languages ​​and, from 1988, director of the department for comparative studies of Indo-European languages ​​at the Institute for Linguistics of the Academy of Sciences. During this time he repeatedly received teaching assignments and substitute positions at the Universities of Leningrad / Saint Petersburg and Vilnius , where he mainly taught the history and runology of the Germanic languages .

Between 1994 and 2007 Kusmenko was professor for Scandinavian linguistics at the Northern Europe Institute of the Humboldt University in Berlin. Since his retirement at Humboldt University in 2007, he has been working again as a researcher in the department for comparative studies of Indo-European languages ​​at the Institute for Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg. Furthermore, he regularly receives teaching assignments at the universities in Berlin and Vilnius.

The focus of Kusmenko's research and teaching is on the North Germanic languages, especially on historical phonology, dialectology , language contact and runology. He has also researched and taught Sami , language typology and Old Norse literature .

Particularly noteworthy are his recent research on the influence of the Finno-Ugric contact languages ​​during the evolution of North Germanic. The two monographs from 2008 and 2011 deal with this question in detail. The hypothesis of a Sami substratum in North Germanic dialects was already expressed by Kusmenko in an article in 1983 and in his habilitation thesis in 1984.

Jurij Kuzmenko also contributed to the documentation and description of the threatened Kolasam languages ​​and was the first Russian linguist in this field after Georgi Martynowitsch Kert . In a language documentation project led by him and Michael Rießler at the Humboldt University, Kusmenko u. a. together with the Kildinsamischen language activists Nina Jelissejewna Afanassjewa and Alexandra Andrejewna Antonowa as mother tongue consultants.
