history

It was built from 1959 to 1963 as a replacement for the former Royal Cell Prison, which was erected outside the city of Hanover in 1875 , but was then located in the center of the city due to city expansion, at today's Raschplatz. The JVA on Schulenburger Landstrasse in the Hainholz district has around 600 places and houses around 13,500 people annually. It has a partial institution in Langenhagen for the execution of the deportation detention and a detention center in the Halthoffstrasse. The Hanover prison also serves as a so-called instruction department (also known as the turntablecalled), via which prisoners in Lower Saxony are distributed to the individual penal institutions throughout Lower Saxony after they have gone through the induction procedure in accordance with the Lower Saxony induction and enforcement plan . Around 13,000 prisoners are transported annually, of which around 6,000 spend at least one night in the transport house .

The nickname Hotel zur Kugel is still used today for the Hanover prison. This is due to the fact that from 1963 to 2005 there was a spherical gasometer in front of the main entrance .
