The Ueckermünde correctional facility was a correctional facility in the Berndshof district of the port city of Ueckermünde in the east of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The institution was established in 1953 as a prison labor camp during the GDR era .

history

In 1953, the facility, located on the site of a brickworks directly on the Stettiner Haff , was put into operation. It developed from a detention labor camp in the 1950s through a “work education command” in the 1960s to a “prison command” in 1974 with 735 prisoners. After 1990 the prison became a correctional facility and the first open prison facility in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Until 2003, the JVA Ueckermünde was the only penal institution in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania that exclusively practiced open execution.

In 2003, an additional 40 places were made available in the closed prison. The capacity of the in the Ziegeleistr. 1, 17373 Ueckermünde , there was a total of 140 prison places. They were accommodated in individual and communal cells with a maximum of five prisoners . According to the general enforcement plan of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the Ueckermünde JVA was responsible for adult male convicts with prison sentences of up to three years in a closed prison . After examination and suitability, a transfer to the open execution took place.

On May 1, 2009, the Ueckermünde JVA was closed after only 23 prisoners were housed in the open prison due to falling occupancy and extensive renovation measures would have been necessary for continued operation.
