The Justus Liebig House is a building in Darmstadt . It was named after the chemist Justus von Liebig , who was born here in 1803 .

History and description

The Justus Liebig House was built on the area of ​​the former old town between 1961 and 1964. The plans for the new building go back to 1954. The opening took place on March 3, 1964. The building replaces the buildings of the city library and the old town museum which were destroyed in an air raid in 1944. The construction costs amounted to 4.2 million DM.

The building houses the Darmstadt City Library , the Darmstadt Adult Education Center, a hall ( Dr.-Günther-Ziegler-Saal ) with 361 seats, six classrooms , two work rooms and a photo laboratory .

The holdings of the municipal art collection and the city museum were temporarily housed in the basement of the building.

The foyer of the building is used for exhibitions ( municipal gallery ). On October 29, 1994, the extension of the city library connected to the Justus-Liebig-Haus was inaugurated.

Varia

The Darmstadt Adult Education Center, founded in 1919, is located in the west wing . In the basement of the Justus-Liebig-Haus resides the Hessen State Association of the Free German Authors Association (FDA) and the Darmstadt tape and stereo friends .
