Justus Grimm

Justus Grimm (* 1970 in Hamburg ) is a German cellist and professor for violoncello at the Royal Conservatory Antwerp.

biography

Justus Grimm began playing the cello at the age of five with his father, continued his studies with Ulrich Voss and Claus Kanngiesser, completed his training in the master class of Frans Helmerson in Stockholm and Cologne and passed the concert exam there.

Justus Grimm made his debut as a soloist in 1993 with the Hamburg State Orchestra with the world premiere of Matthias Pintscher's cello concerto “La Metamorfosi di Narciso”. He also worked as a soloist with numerous orchestras, including the English Chamber Orchestra , the London Chamber Orchestra, the Orchester Royal de Wallonie, the Orchester Royale Philharmonic de Liège and the Brandenburg State Orchestra Frankfurt . He was a guest at the Berlin Philharmonic, the Hamburg Music Hall, the Cologne Philharmonic, the Herkulessaal in Munich and the Centro Cultural Lisbon. In 2012, his performance of Tchaikovsky's “Rococo Variations” with the Orchester Symphonique de la Monnaie under Carlo Rizzi was broadcast live from the Palais des Beaux Arts in Brussels as part of a TV production.

His chamber music career led Justus Grimm u. a. with Abel Raman El Bacha, Daniel Blumenthal, Gerard Caussee, Augustin Dumay , Stephen Kovacevich , Antonio Pappano or Kazushi Ōno . He is a founding member of the Malibran Quartet and was principal cellist in the orchestra of the Théâtre Royale de la Monnaie in Brussels from 2000 to 2012 .

Justus Grimm has received invitations to important festivals such as the Ludwigsburg Festival, the Festival van Vaanderen, Lisbon's Dias de Musica, the Festival Floriregio Salamanca and others. Since 2010 he has been “Artist in Residence” of the Cantiere Internazionale d'Arte in Montepulciano.

After teaching at the “Chapelle Reine Elisabeth” in Brussels, Justus Grimm accepted a call as professor for violoncello and artistic director at the Royal Conservatory Antwerp in 2008 .

He plays a cello made by the Italian violin maker Testore in 1760.

Awards

In 1999, Justus Grimm (together with the pianist Florian Wiek ) won first prize in the Maria Canals music competition and the prize in the German music competition .

The complete recording of César Franck's chamber music works was awarded the Prix Cäcilia by the Belgian press as the best CD of 2012.
