Károly Kisfaludy (born February 5, 1788 in Tét , † November 21, 1830 in Pest ) was a Hungarian playwright , painter and the brother of Sándor Kisfaludy . He is considered to be the founder of the Hungarian national drama.
He grew up without a mother, who died in his birth, with his seven siblings with his father, with whom he did not have a good relationship. Kisfaludy began writing poetry and songs during his army service during the Napoleonic Wars . After leaving in 1810, he studied art and traveled to Vienna in 1812 and to Italy in 1815. He celebrated his breakthrough as a playwright in 1819 when his tragedies A tatárok Magyarországon (“The Tatars in Hungary”) and Ilka, vagy Nándorfehérvár bevétele (“Ilka or the conquest of Belgrade”) were a great success. His works have been translated into German and performed in Vienna. Károly Kisfaludy died of tuberculosis in 1830.
