Kägi fret

The Kägi fret (international: Kägi) is a chocolate- covered wafer specialty from Toggenburg , a region in Eastern Switzerland . The bars, which are also available in other flavors, are produced in Lichtensteig in the canton of St. Gallen by Kägi Söhne AG, Toggenburger Waffeln- & Biscuitfabrik.

history

The founder Otto Kägi Senior bought the “Zum Hecht” restaurant and confectionery in Lichtensteig in 1934 and manufactured biscuits and waffle products in the “Zum Hecht” business and bakery. His bicycle, with which he distributed his baked goods and also made them famous, became legendary. His sons Otto, Eugen and Alfred took over the company in the 1950s, which now has twelve employees. It was renamed Kägi Söhne AG and moved to a new factory building that still exists today. In 1956 the company exported biscuit products for the first time. In 1958 the "Kägi fret" was brought onto the market, which was coated with chocolate as an innovation to the previous products. The name came about when the company's founders combined their surname with part of the French word for waffle ("gaufrette").

The company in Lichtensteig has been producing its own chocolate since 1960 using its own longitudinal conchers . Since then nothing should have changed in the recipe of the product. The wafer bars consist of three layers of waffles with a cream filling, which are surrounded by milk chocolate .

In 2009, Kägi fret was exported to 19 countries, with a total of 37 percent of production leaving Switzerland. In 2016 there was talk of 27 countries and 50 percent domestic share. The main foreign markets are the Arab region and China, so the company has an office in Dubai and one in Hong Kong .

In German-speaking countries the name “Kägi fret” was retained, while the product is now marketed internationally as “Kägi”, previously as “Toggi”.

The waffle factory was family-owned until 1996. Then the company was sold to the consumer goods group and kiosk operator Valora . In April 2008, Kägi was transferred to the holding company Argos Soditic. In 2010 it was sold to WM15 Holding in Baar, which in turn is part of the Burger Söhne Holding GmbH company.

Product variants

In addition to the normal standard pack of 50  g, there is a “Kägi fret mini” with 6.4 g. In addition, different flavors with dark chocolate, hazelnut, cappuccino, rum, coconut and others are offered.
