The Carinthian peasant uprising was a peasant uprising in Carinthia / Austria in 1478. The peasants suffering from the Turkish threat ( Ottomans ) and high set-up taxes formed the Carinthian farmers' union under the leadership of Peter Wunderlich . The peasants not only rebelled against the authorities, but also opposed the Turkish cavalry troops.

In 1473 and 1476 there were two Turkish incursions into Carinthia . Because the farmers did not want to be exposed to further attacks defenseless in view of the inaction of their masters, they organized themselves in a Carinthian farmers' union under the leadership of Peter Wunderlich. The chronicler Jakob Unrest wrote about the establishment of this covenant on February 2nd, 1478 near Spittal an der Drau in the Ortenburg rule : “Do you pay after Christ purt 1478 umb Lichtmeß, the Pawren pey der Traa made a poundt under Spital. Sy made iren punt grosz and ye longer in short days, the bigger and wier - dersleb Pundt grew in short as ain klains water from a big cloud saying “ The farmers' union was able to, when the Turks on June 25th 1478 over the Predil for the third Penetrated once, mobilized 3000 armed men on the "Goggauer Wiese" near Coccau near Tarvisio in the Canal Valley . In view of the onrushing riders, however, a large number of them fled, so that the remaining 600 or so men were overwhelmed in a short time. 300 fatalities have been reported. We spent the night at Strasbourg Castle near Thörl. Carinthia was thus open to the Turks and they plundered as far as Upper Carinthia. As a precaution , the Knights of St. George did not leave Millstatt Monastery , which had been converted into a fortress , while the surrounding area was devastated. Subsequently, the peasant uprising was put down, Peter Wunderlich caught near Gmünd and cruelly executed by quarters at Litzlhof near Lendorf am Lurnfeld .

Wunderlich is thought of with a Peter-Wunderlich-Straße in Klagenfurt and Spittal .

The uprising is the oldest known inner-Austrian peasant uprising, which was particularly popular in the Slovene-speaking areas, as this area suffered the most under the Ottomans.
