Geographical location

Characteristic location on the hillside

The KKG, one of four Neustadt high schools , is located in Villenstrasse. 1 on the slope next to the Haardter stairway and above the straw market, i.e. a little outside of the immediate city center.

The building is classified as a cultural monument and is named by the General Directorate for Cultural Heritage of Rhineland-Palatinate in the monument register of the city of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse as “defining the cityscape”.

history

The KKG was founded on November 7, 1836, when the Palatinate belonged to the Kingdom of Bavaria , as a municipal high school for girls in the Kellereistr. 1 and was located in the middle of the old town. The current building was erected shortly before the First World War and moved into in 1912. In 1950 the school was converted into a "New Language High School for Girls with Lyceum"; next to a neunklassigen school with school-leaving examination there was a sechsklassiges Lyceum with a high-school diploma . The name was changed to “Staatliches Käthe-Kollwitz-Gymnasium” - after the artist Käthe Kollwitz - on July 6, 1968.

Traditionally, the KKG was only open to girls until the beginning of the 1976/77 school year, when boys were also accepted for the first time.

The KKG was one of seven schools in Rhineland-Palatinate that were involved in testing the Mainz study level (MSS) from 1969 . The MSS was introduced nationwide in 1975 and is still valid today in a modified form. This is a reformed upper level in which the students can determine their subjects within a broad framework according to basic and advanced courses . A course system extends lessons to the afternoons too; Saturday was no longer a class day in the 1990s.
