Kåre Kristiansen (2004)

Kåre Gulbrand Kristiansen (born March 11, 1920 in Bergen ; † December 3, 2005 ) was a Norwegian politician of the Kristelig Folkeparti (KrF), a committed Israel friend, anti-abortion and EU supporter.

Kristiansen started as a telegraph operator for the Norwegian State Railways (NSB) . He was its director from 1968 and 1970 before moving to Storting for Fylke Oslo . There he was a member of parliament from 1973 to 1977 and again from 1981 to 1989. From 1983 to 1986 Kristiansen was the oil and energy minister in the Willoch government . Twice, from 1975 to 1977 and 1979 to 1983, he was party chairman of KrF. In 1989 he withdrew from the Storting, which he justified with the departure of the KrF from its conservative course.

Kristiansen was a member of the Nobel Prize Committee for the Nobel Peace Prize from 1990 to 1994 . He withdrew from it when the Yasser Arafat Prize was to be awarded.

Kristiansen was seen as an opponent of the Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip . Shortly before his death, he boycotted the celebrations for the 15th anniversary of Hjelp Jødene Hjem to protest against the participation of the former Norwegian chief rabbi and Israeli deputy foreign minister Michael Melchior .
