The Bulgarian fir ( Abies borisii-regis ), also known as King Boris fir , is a species of the fir genus ( Abies ) in the pine family (Pinaceae). It is native to Southeast Europe . Morphologically , it stands between the silver fir ( Abies alba ) and the Greek fir ( Abies cephalonica ).

Vegetative characteristics
The Bulgarian fir is an evergreen tree that reaches heights of 45 to rarely 60 meters and diameters from 1.5 to rarely 2 meters at chest height . The bark of the young twigs is light yellow and covered with short, brown hair.
With a length of 3 to 6 millimeters, the oval-conical buds are brown and either resinless or coated with a thin layer of colorless resin .
The needles , usually arranged like a comb on the branches, are 2 to 3 centimeters long and 2 to 3 millimeters wide. The needle tip can be rounded or notched. Two white stomatal bands run along the underside of the needle .
Generative characteristics
The cones are similar to those of the silver fir ( Abies alba ) and those of the Greek fir ( Abies cephalonica ). With a length of 11 to 21 centimeters long and a diameter of 3 to 4 centimeters, they are cylindrical to narrow-conical in shape. Before they ripen, they are greenish pink to purple in color. The seed scales are 3 to 3.5 inches long and just as wide.
The seeds are around 12 millimeters long and have a wing that is around 20 millimeters in size.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.
Occurrence
The distribution area of the Bulgarian fir extends from Bulgaria, Northern Greece, Albania to the former Yugoslavia . The species is found at altitudes between 700 and 1800 meters.
Systematics
The scientific species name Abies borisii-regis is reminiscent of Tsar Boris III. , during whose reign this species was first scientifically described by Johannes Mattfeld in 1925 . Abies borisii-regis is assigned to the Abies section within the genus of firs ( Abies ) .
Synonyms for Abies borisii-regis Mattf. are Abies alba var. acutifolia Turrill and Abies alba subsp. acutifolia (Turrill) Fukarek .
