The King of Uvea ( French Roi d'Uvea ; Wallisian Lavelua ) is the traditional head of the Kingdom of Uvea , which belongs to France as part of the French overseas territory of Wallis and Futuna . The French Republic recognizes the three traditional kings under the Wallis and Futuna Constitution of 1961. It is an elective monarchy .

appointment

On April 16, 2016, Tominiko Halagahu was installed as the new king of Uvea by the village chiefs. The noble families, however, objected to the decision on the grounds that their task was to appoint a new king. As a result, Patalione Kanimoa , the king appointed by the noble families, was recognized by France.

Women can also perform the highest traditional office of uvea as queen of uvea. Four queens are known from the past.

tasks

The king of Uvea has limited power as he always has to act in consultation with the village chiefs and the aliki - the people who elect him. He mainly negotiates with the French representatives on development aid that the Administrateur Supérieur of Wallis and Futuna has at their disposal .

The king appoints a prime minister and five ministers to assist him . For the three districts Hihifo , Hahake and Mu'a he also appoints a lazy person, the head of the district. These are the link between the king and the 21 village chiefs elected by the villagers.

household

As King of Uvea, the incumbent receives money from France to cover his expenses. He also uses it to compensate all other officials in the kingdom. These include the ministers, the prime minister, the sluggard and the village chief. In 2005 the budget was around 5,500 euros.

France can stop payments if the king has made mistakes. This was used in 2005 when the then King Tomasi Kulimoetoke II interfered in the judiciary by opposing the arrest of his grandson for drunk driving .
