The Königsburg ( Danish : Kongsborg ) is an abandoned medieval tower hill castle (Motte) near the village of Bohnert in the municipality of Kosel in Schwansen .
history
The castle was built around 1415 by the Danish King Erik of Pomerania on a headland on the south bank of the Schlei . It was one of several weir systems to control the Schlei (such as the castle near Missunde and the Schwonsburg / Svaneborg or Oldenburg / Gammelborg near Schleimünde ). The royal castle was built at the time of the dispute between Danes and Holsteiners over the young Duchy of Schleswig . At the Danish Diet in Myborg in 1413, Schleswig was awarded to the Danish crown, which the Holstein count Heinrich IV did not accept. In 1417 there was therefore a battle at the royal castle. It cannot be ruled out that there was an older castle complex in the same place before 1415.
The castle was built at a strategic point on a headland just before the Missunder Enge and only connected to the mainland by salt marshes . It consisted of an inner and an outer castle. The inner castle was in the shape of a square with sides of about 50 meters. In the south of the inner castle there was probably a round tower standing on a hill . The outer castle was built in the shape of a pentagon with sides between 212 and 152 meters. It was surrounded by a rampart with ditches about 4 meters deep. After the castle was abandoned, the complex fell into disrepair, and stones were then used, among other things, to repair the church in Rieseby .
Remains of the ramparts can still be seen today. A villa was built in the area of the inner castle at the beginning of the 20th century. The site is not freely accessible today. A Schleswig folk tale is associated with the royal castle , according to which a peasant boy is said to have seen a golden cradle there.
