With over 1200 inhabitants (2015), Köpingebro is the second largest town in the municipality of Ystad in Skåne .

In 1894 the Ystad sugar refinery was founded, which made the place an important location for the Swedish sugar industry. The sugar factory closed at the end of 2006.
