The coastal office is a research project and sees itself as a mediator between content and actors in coastal protection .

background

With a coastline of around 3,700 km in Germany, more than 4 million people live directly or indirectly in the coastal area of the North and Baltic Seas. North Sea cities like Emden or Wilhelmshaven , as well as Baltic Sea cities like Kiel , Lübeck , Rostock and the city states Hamburg and Bremen are economic centers with an important meaning, u. a. for tourism, the port industry and logistics services. The Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) deals with the increasing use of coastal areas, which can be seen not only in Germany, but also in Europe. In the economic and natural area “coast”, numerous activities and interests compete with one another. Leisure and recreation, port management, wind energy generation and raw material extraction are just four examples of different activities, which are on the other hand confronted with limited areas and resources as well as a sensitive ecosystem.

job

In order to promote an intensive exchange of information and experience between the actors in the coastal area, the coastal office wants to promote communication between those involved. The aim is to develop cross-sector and coordinated solutions. The coastal office is the cross-border ICZM contact point. This is where knowledge and experience about strategies and measures come together.

The coastal office works on the following key areas:

The step from the general political and scientific level to tangible measures should be encouraged. In the current pilot phase there are two main areas of action that are particularly important for the development of the coastal region:

  • Tourism as a central economic factor on the coast: The industry is confronted with a number of changes: The socio-demographic change, combined with new target groups and changing demands of travelers, special offers in the health sector, necessary adjustments to the tourist offer that require sustainable solutions.
  • Climate-related coastal protection In this area, research results, scenarios and solution models for regional and local planning requirements are compiled and the findings are made available to coastal zone management.
