Kārlis Zāle
Kārlis Zāle (born October 28, 1888 in Mažeikiai , Kaunas Governorate , † February 19, 1942 in Inčukalns ) was a Latvian sculptor.
Life
Zāle received his education at the Kazan Art School . Later he lived in Moscow , where he worked in the workshop of Stepan Ersja and in St. Petersburg as a student at the Academy of Arts . In 1921 he went to Berlin , a center of Expressionism at the time . In 1923 he returned to Latvia. He received a large commission for the monuments of the Riga Brethren Cemetery . He later won a tender for the design of the Riga Freedom Monument , which was inaugurated in 1935. From 1936 Zāle then headed the sculpture department at the Latvian Art Academy .
Other well-known works by Zāle are the tomb of Andrejs Pumpurs and a bust of Rainis in the Latvian National Theater .
