KG Subramanyan (2008)

KG Subramanyan ( Malayalam കെ.ജി. സുബ്രമണ്യൻ ; born February 15, 1924 in Kuthuparamba , then British India , now Kerala ; † June 29, 2016 in Vadodara ) was an Indian painter .

life and work

Kalpathi Ganpathi Subramanyan studied to Bachelor economics at Presidency College in Madras . He was an active supporter of Gandhi . From 1944 he began studying with Nandalal Bose , Binode Behari Mukherjee and Ramkinkar Baij at the Visva-Bharati University in Shantiniketan . He graduated in 1948 and in 1951 was appointed professor at the Faculty of Fine Art at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in Baroda . From 1980 until his retirement in 1989, Subramanyan taught at the Visva-Bharati University as a professor of painting. Subramanyan's works were exhibited at documenta 14 in 2017 .

In addition to painting, Subramanyan also worked as a sculptor, graphic artist and illustrator of children's books. He also wrote art theory as well as poems and essays in which he speaks out against the division in Indian society.
