KR Mohanan

KR Mohanan ( Malayalam കെ.ആർ. മോഹനൻ ; born December 11, 1947 in Chavakkad , Malabar ; † June 25, 2017 in Thiruvananthapuram , Kerala ) was an Indian director of Malayalam films .

Life

Mohanan was born in a coastal town in what was then the Malabar district (now part of the Thrissur district ) of the former British-Indian administrative unit of Madras . He graduated in zoology and then studied film directing at the Pune State Film School . He was employed by the Kerala State Film Development Corporation and has written and directed numerous documentaries including The Racing Snakes and The House of God . With the short documentaries about a Kathakali percussionist Kalamandalam Krishnankutty Poduval (1989) and Visuddha Vanangal (1994) about the tradition of snake worship in Kerala, he won National Film Awards in the documentary film category .

He made his feature film debut in 1978 with Ashwathama , based on a novel by Madampu Kunjukuttan , based on a Mahabharata legend , who also played the lead role in the film. For this film, Mohanan received a 1978 Kerala State Film Award for Best Picture. Almost a decade later Mohanan was able to finish his second feature film Purushartham (1987), with which he confirmed his status as an important representative of the so-called parallel cinema in Malayalam film. The film title refers to Purushartha , the four life goals Artha , Kama , Dharma and Moksha , which are worth striving for according to Hindu ethics . The film adaptation of the story of a widow who tries to free herself from the ghost of her late husband won a National Film Award for best film in Malayalam . His third film Swaroopam (1992) - a story about a man who escapes everyday reality by fleeing his thoughts into a mythical past - with Sreenivasan in the lead role, also received this national award in Indian film. All three of Mohanan's feature films were produced by PT Kunhi Mohammed .

From 2006 to 2011, KR Mohanan was President of the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy and in this capacity also Director of the International Film Festival of Kerala .
