The railcars VT 1 and 2 of the Altenaer Eisenbahn (KAE) district were built in 1955 by the Talbot wagon factory for the KAE routes starting from Lüdenscheid . At the factory they had the type designation Eifel II, as they were a further development of the single-engine Eifel type railcars . After the KAE was closed, both vehicles were sold: the VT 1 became Inselbahn Langeoog VT 1, the VT 2 Inselbahn Juist T 4. The latter also came to Langeoog after the closure of the Juist Inselbahn as VT 4. In 1995, both railcars were bought by the Harz Narrow Gauge Railways and they have been used as 187 011 and 013 ever since . To both vehicles were from the DB -Werk Halberstadt rebuilt and the conditions in the resin adjusted. Among other things, the funds entrances were closed, the folding accordion doors replaced with swinging doors and installed on the second side doors. Incidentally, after a conversion, both railcars only have one engine system (the axle formula B'B 'became B'2'). In 2002 there was an adaptation to the tram construction and operating regulations (BOStrab) by installing indicators and brake lights.
Because of their previous area of use, the railcars were nicknamed fish fingers in the Harz Mountains . After the appearance of the new railcars 187 016 to 019 , they are used a little less often and are then mostly used on the Selketalbahn .
In 2012–2014, the two railcars were extensively overhauled at the Miraustraße vehicle works . They received a Voith fluid transmission T211r3 with converter and clutch as well as a MAN D0836 diesel engine with 206 kW (280 PS).
