The type series KHD V6M 436 R are three-axle diesel locomotives with rod drive , which were designed for medium-sized shunting and light line service. They were built from 1948 to 1958 by Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz (KHD) as a further development of the DR series V 36 and used on various private railways in Germany and Europe. Several locomotives in the series have been preserved to this day.

development

After the Second World War , the KHD locomotive factory was the first factory in Germany to be able to return to production in 1946. First orders that had been left during the war were processed, then in 1948 one of the first new designs was created with this series of locomotives. At that time, the engine designation at KHD was identical to the locomotive designation. The basis of the name was a new engine series, which was designed as a water-cooled four-stroke engine with cylinders arranged vertically. The engine designation V6M 436 R means: V = four-stroke engine, 6 = number of cylinders, M = water-cooled, 4 = fourth design of the engine series, 36 = piston stroke in cm and R regular-gauge shunting locomotive.

The locomotives were built in two series. While the first series (until 1953) was still very similar to the V 36, the locomotives of the second series (from 1955) received a raised driver's cab to improve the visibility of the locomotive crew. Furthermore, the edges of the locomotive were rounded and the shape made more modern.

Sales locomotives first series

The machines of the 1st series were delivered to Germany:

One locomotive was sold to Italy .

Sales locomotives second series

From this series were delivered to Germany:

One locomotive was sold to Italy.

technology

The locomotives were built in the same way as the Wehrmacht locomotive WR 360 C 14 with three axles that were driven by the jackshaft and coupling rods between the 2nd and 3rd axles . The cab was at the rear of the locomotive. They had six-cylinder four-stroke diesel engines with the designation KHD V6M 436R . These were water-cooled and could be started with compressed air. Power Transmission was a fluid transmission from Voith used.

Locomotives first delivery series

Three of the locomotives in this series were still in service after 2000. A locomotive from RAG Aktiengesellschaft was still available in Grefrath in 2006 . Photos of two locomotives that were sold to Italy existed after 2000.

Locomotives second delivery series

VW

Two locomotives from the Volkswagen works were in operation until the end of the 1980s. At the end of the 1980s they were transferred to the Braunschweig locomotive park . One locomotive with the designation V 45 211 has been preserved in running order, the other is used as a spare parts dispenser.

armed forces

From its commissioning in 1957, this locomotive was housed in an ammunition depot in Emsland until the 2008 deadline. The mission ended with the closure of the ammunition depot. The locomotive was then taken over by the Dresden Army Museum and given to the Westerwald railway enthusiasts as a loan. This locomotive will be operational in 2019.
