Kil is a place ( Tatort ) in the Swedish province of Värmlands län and the historical province of Värmland . It is also the capital of the municipality of the same name . The name is first recorded as Chill in 1315 and refers to the former parish , which has been called Stora Kil since 1885 . However, only the name Kil was later adopted for the place.

The place is an important railway junction , as the Värmlandsbana , formerly known as Nordvästra stambanan , crosses the Kil-Torsby railway line as well as the Bergslagsbana and the Vänerbana .

The burial ground of Runnevåls (RAÄ-Nr. Stora Kil 1: 1) is in the north of Kil.
