history

KTLA Tower

Initially started as a test transmitter with the callsign W6XYZ in 1941, KTLA went on air with its regular program on January 22, 1947. The first show was hosted by comedian Bob Hope ; at KTLA, show greats of the time such as Edgar Bergen and Mickey Rooney appeared.

Competitor of the transmitter is the Fox - affiliate KTTV . In 2008 the Sunset-Gower Studio was merged with the KTLA Studios to form the new Capital Studios .

News coverage

The broadcaster performed technical pioneering work with live broadcasts on site ("on-the-spot news coverage"): On February 27, 1947, KTLA reported live for the first time from the scene of a factory explosion on Pico Boulevard and also in 1949, as a child in a fountain had fallen. KTLA was the first television station to broadcast live from a helicopter and was the first to introduce mobile broadcast vehicles.

During the Watts uprising in 1965, KTLA reported on the unrest from a helicopter.

In March 1991, African American Rodney King was beaten up by four white police officers. A neighbor filmed this and gave the recording to KTLA ; the broadcaster broadcast the video, making what happened public. The later acquittal of the main perpetrators sparked the riots in Los Angeles in 1992 .
