KYPCK ( Russian КУРСК , spoken Kursk ) is a Finnish metal band.

history

After Sentenced broke up in 2005, guitarist and songwriter Sami Lopakka took a longer musical break and founded the merchandising company Northern Tribe with two friends, which produces clothing series for metal fans. Finally, in the winter of 2006/2007, he teamed up with some friends - singer Erkki Seppänen, JT Ylä-Rautio on bass and producer Hiili Hiilesmaa on drums - and realized a KYPCK with them, an idea that he had been planning over and over again since 1999 would have. In the summer of 2007, the recording work began for the debut album Cherno , which was produced and mixed by Hiilesmaa. The mastering was done by Mika Jussila in the Finnvox Studios . On January 23, 2008 the single 1917 was released, for which a video was later recorded. Shortly thereafter, KYPCK graced the cover of the 54th issue of Inferno , Finland's largest metal magazine. On March 8th, on the occasion of the release of their debut album, the band played a concert in the PSK Kaupunni bar of ex-Sentenced member Vesa Ranta in Oulu . Four days later, Cherno was released and debuted at number 11 on the Finnish album charts. On May 30, 2008, KYPCK signed a contract with Century Media , which Cherno released on July 18, 2008 worldwide.

The second studio album Nizhe was released on February 9, 2011.

Band concept

The "tape car" KYPCKS, a Lada

KYPCK is named after the Russian city of Kursk , with particular emphasis on the spelling in the Cyrillic alphabet . According to singer Erkki Seppänen, the band wanted a short, masculine-sounding name, the meaning of which is also known outside of Russia.

The texts are entirely in Russian ; in the CD booklet they are written in Cyrillic script, and a transcription into the Latin alphabet has also been made available. Lopakka and Seppänen are responsible for the texts, the latter having done all the translations into Russian, as he speaks fluent Russian and lived for several years in Saint Petersburg and Moscow , where he was employed at the embassy. Mainly the songs deal with current and historical events in Russia. So is Stalingrad from the policy of repression of Stalin , 1917 is about Hiilesmaas great-grandfather who in the militia was in St. Petersburg and during the February Revolution of 1917 fled to Finland and finally disappeared in America. Some of the songs have individual stories of suffering such as alcohol abuse and dysfunctional relationships on the subject.

style

The band chose “Fast Russian Doom Metal from Finland” and “Doomsday Metal” as the self-designation of their style. Reviewers describe the group's style as a combination of Gothic and Doom Metal , with reviewers referring primarily to representatives of Alternative Metal , such as Type O Negative and Death Doom , such as Kuolemanlaakso or the early Cathedral . Further parallels are drawn with Sentenced and Fields of the Nephilim . The singing is said to be scratchy and rough. The guitar playing, on the other hand, is brought close to Death Metal and emphasized as particularly deep and riff-oriented . The opposite is said to be minimalism when playing the drums.
