Kuolemanlaakso is a Finnish death doom band from Kuopio and Helsinki that was founded in 2010. The band name was created by translating the name Death Valley .
history
The band was founded in spring 2010 and was initially a solo project by guitarist Markus Laakso. He recorded a first demo that contained four songs but was never officially released. Due to the positive reactions of his fellow musicians, to whom he played the demo, he decided to continue the band project and bring more members into the band. Mikko Kotamäki ( Swallow the Sun , Barren Earth ) performed the vocals, Savon “Kouta” Surma played the electric guitar, Tuomo “Usva” Räisänen played the bass and Toni “Tiera” Ronkainen ( Discard ) played drums . In February 2012 the band moved to the Woodshed Studio in Germany , which was directed by V. Santura from Triptykon and Dark Fortress . There the band recorded their debut album Uljas uusi maailma , which Santura co-produced, mixed and mastered and also contributed some guitar passages. The album was released in the same year and reached position 42 in the Finnish album charts. The publication was followed by several concerts in Finland, as well as a performance at the Tuska Open Air Metal Festival in 2013. 2012, the band also went again Santura in the Woodshed Studio to accommodate an EP that in November 2012 at Svart Records released . In addition to two own songs, the EP also contained a cover version of the title-giving Juice-Leskinen song. The second album Tulijoutsen was released on the same label in February 2014 .
style
According to metalfromfinland.com , Laakso was initially influenced by Eparistera Daimones from Triptykon . The texts are in Finnish and were inspired by Eino Leino's collection of poems Helkavirsiä . According to Olaf Schmidt from Laut.de, the band on Tulijoutsen play a mixture of death and doom metal , although, unlike other bands in the genre, there is no lack of variety. In addition, sonic parallels to Kotamäki's other bands Swallow the Sun and Barren Earth can be heard. The second half of the album in particular is more experimental, as it contains acoustic guitars , female vocals and Moog synthesizers , reminiscent of Amorphis .
