Barren Earth is a progressive death metal band that was formed in Helsinki , Finland in late 2007 .

Band history

Basic idea and formation of the band

The bassist Olli-Pekka Laine, who was a founding member of Amorphis , had left it again in 2000 and looked for other bands with whose music - in contrast to Amorphis - he felt connected again. At Chaosbreed he met the drummer Marko Tarvonen, who in turn was already successful with the band Moonsorrow . Laine had a lot of new ideas for songs that he wanted to implement in a new band and had moved Tarvonen to build this new band together.

Laine and Tarvonen had already worked together with future keyboardist Kasper Mårtenson around 2005 on a music project called 'The Camel Gang'.

Together with Mårtenson on keyboard, Janne Perttilä also got on as guitarist (Perttilä had participated in Moonsorrow's live performances). After the general basic idea arose in late 2006, the band was not founded until the end of 2007.

When the first song plans were in place, a lead guitarist was still missing, but he was found with Sami Yli-Sirniö from Kreator . When they were in the studio to record the first four songs in 2008, Mikko Kotamäki of Swallow the Sun could still be won as a singer.

Contract and admission

After a contract with Peaceville Records was signed, the first recordings for the first album finally came in 2009 at Seawolf Studios, Helsinki with Jukka Varmo. Further recordings were then moved to the Jive Studio. Dan Swanö ( Opeth / Katatonia ) from Unisound Studios did the mixing and audio mastering.

debut

The debut album should be available in early 2010. As early as November 2009, an EP called Our Twilight came out with four tracks that did not appear on the album except for one of the songs. Shortly after that, Barren Earth had their debut gig at Dante's Highlight in the band 's hometown. Around that time, the title Curse of the Red River was picked for the first album. The artwork was created by Travis Smith, who also worked for Opeth and Katatonia.

Tour and more

Towards the middle / end of 2010 a tour was planned on which they played mainly in the USA and Canada, but also in Germany at the Summerbreeze Festival .

Since all members come from existing, well-known bands, Barren Earth can also be called a supergroup .

On May 31, 2011 it was announced on the Barren Earth homepage that the band in Helsinki are once again in the studio with Jukka Varmo. This time the recordings are made in Sonic Pump Studio and mixed again by Dan Swanö, who himself played in bands like Edge of Sanity or Katatonia. The 2nd Barren Earth album is due to be released in autumn 2011 via Peaceville Records. This time the cover artwork is designed by Paul Romano, who has already worked for Mastodon, Hate Eternal, The Red Chord and Trivium.

Music genre

The genre can generally be referred to as Progressive Death Metal. The band itself describes it as a mixture of modern and traditional death metal with influences from progressive rock and folk of the 70s. Bands like Paradise Lost , Opeth , Pink Floyd , Jethro Tull and some pioneers of Finnish progressive rock can be cited as an influence . Of course, you can also hear the influences of the bands from which the band members come.
