Mohamed Mzali was Prime Minister of Tunisia between 1980 and 1986

The Mzali cabinet was formed on April 23, 1980 by Prime Minister Mohamed Mzali of the Socialist Destur Party (PSD). It replaced the Nouira cabinet and remained in office until July 8, 1986, after which it was replaced by the Sfar cabinet .

Composition and government policy 1980 to 1986

The Mzali Cabinet (April 23, 1986)

As the successor to Hédi Nouira, Mzali began with a policy of liberalization. The executive committee of the union federation UGTT ( Union Générale Tunisienne du Travail ) , newly elected in April 1981, consisted largely of leaders arrested in 1978. A list connection between the UGTT and the PSD won all 136 seats in the National Assembly in the elections of November 1, 1981 under the new multi-party system with a five percent hurdle. In March 1982 a friendship treaty was signed with neighboring Algeria , which was supplemented by a defense agreement in 1983. In 1984 serious unrest forced President Habib Bourguiba to lift food price increases.

The cabinet was restructured several times on individual positions, namely on September 4, 1980, December 3, 1980, January 2, 1981, April 16, 1981, August 10, 1981, March 17, 1983, June 18, 1983, October 14 1983, November 1, 1983, November 25, 1983, January 7, 1984, January 20, 1984, March 14, 1984, May 8, 1984, August 25, 1984, October 29, 1984, September 20, 1985, October 23 1985, January 22, 1986, February 12, 1986, April 7, 1986, April 28, 1986, May 6, 1986 and May 12, 1986.

Prime Minister Mzali was deposed on July 8, 1986 and, after fleeing to Switzerland , sentenced to one year in prison on October 2, 1986 in his absence.
