Mahmoud Mestiri

Mahmoud Mestiri ( Arabic محمود المستيري, DMG Maḥmūd al-Mastīrī ; * December 25, 1929 in Tunis ; † June 28, 2006 ibid) was a Tunisian diplomat and politician of the Socialist Destur Party , who was ambassador several times and was foreign minister between 1987 and 1988 .

Life

Mestiri completed a degree in political science and became a member of the Neo Destur party while studying . After completing his studies, he joined the State Department and was, after various posts, from 1967 to 1969 for the first time permanent representative to the United Nations in New York City . Subsequently, he served from 1969 to 1971 as ambassador in Belgium and was also as such as Ambassador to Luxembourg accredited before he then 1971-1972 Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany was. After a post in the Foreign Ministry, he was ambassador to the Soviet Union from 1973 to 1975 and in this capacity was also accredited as ambassador to the People's Republic of Poland .

After Mestiri was Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs between 1975 and 1976, he took over the post of Permanent Representative to the UN again from 1976 to 1980. After his return, he found new uses in the Foreign Ministry and worked as State Secretary between 1982 and 1986, and then from 1986 to 1987 for the third time as Permanent Representative to the UN.

On November 7, 1987, Mestiri took over the post of Foreign Minister himself as the successor to Hédi Mabrouk and held this position for a year until November 7, 1988, after which Abdelhamid Escheikh succeeded him. He himself then acted as ambassador to Egypt from 1988 to 1990 . In 1994 he was appointed by UN Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali as his special representative for Afghanistan and held this position until 1996.
