Kacper Bażanka , also: Kasper Bażanka (* around 1680 probably in Podlachia ; † January 21, 1726 in Tarnów ) was a Polish Baroque architect . He designed mainly sacred buildings and worked in Krakow and southern Poland.

Life

Bażanka studied at the Luke Academy in Rome. The exact period of study is unknown, but participation in an architecture competition in 1704 is certain. For a while he also studied in Andrea Pozzo's studio . In 1711 he returned to Poland and began to work on the reconstruction of the church and monastery of Norbertanek in Imbramowice . In the same year he also became artistic advisor to the Bishop of Kraków, Kazimierz Lubieński.

The architect was mainly active in Kraków, where he worked on the Peter and Paul Church and the Wawel . He designed the Loretan House (Polish: Domek loretański) of the Capuchin Monastery and the Krakow Missionary Church (Polish: Kościół Nawrócenia św. Pawła ). This building, which was only completed in 1732, shows the influence of Roman baroque architecture in Poland at that time. Bażanka clearly took the works of Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Francesco Borromini as models for his design. In Warsaw, alongside Augustyn Wincenty Locci and Carlo Bay, he was involved in the renovation of the Czapski Palace between 1717 and 1721. In Frombork he created the main altar of the cathedral.

Bażanka was a supporter of illusionism and developed this expression used by Borromini. Presumably he was the teacher of the architect Paweł Giżycki. Bażanka died unexpectedly in the winter of 1726. It is conceivable that the architect, who suffered from epilepsy , fell from a sled and froze to death. He was buried under the Michaels Altar in the Kraków Peter and Paul Church.
