Kahlden Bridge

The Kahldenbrücke is a bascule bridge over the Peene in Demmin on the federal road 110 . It is counted among the major bridges in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . In addition to long-distance traffic, it is also important for inner-city traffic in the Hanseatic city of Demmin, as it connects the districts south of the Peene with the center.

Already the Cityscape Demmin on the Lubinschen card from the early 17th century shows a before Kahldentor located girder bridge over the Peene, the mistake in the map as Tollense was labeled. This bridge, which is important for the city's trade relations, probably existed much earlier. This bridge is missing on a fortification plan from 1720, when Demmin was a fortress town in Swedish Pomerania , but it is included in later plans and illustrations from the 18th century.

Until the 1920s, the Kahlden Bridge was a wooden double bascule bridge, similar to the Wiecker Bridge near Greifswald . Since this could not cope with the increasing traffic, it was replaced in 1925 by a bascule bridge made of steel and concrete. At the end of the Second World War , the bridge was destroyed and only rebuilt in 1950. In 1998 and 2000, the bridge was completely rebuilt for 7.2 million euros. As part of the State Building Prize 2000, the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Chamber of Architects recognized the design and the technically demanding execution. The bridge is opened four times a day for 10 minutes each time.

technology

The total length of the steel balance beam bascule bridge is 34.3 meters, and 36.4 meters between the end supports. The structural steel used has a total mass of 283 tons. The bridge has an area of 485 square meters. The width between the railings is 13.3 meters, the carriageway width 7.3 meters. The bridge has a clear passage width of 12.6 meters. When the hatch is closed, the bridge has a clearance height of 1.8 meters.

The bridge flap is driven hydraulically and mechanically by means of a toothed ring segment on the end cross member. The engine room is located in the eastern pillar below street level. The bridge flap can be closed manually in emergency mode.
