Kaija Menger (born Kymlander, born March 24, 1934 in Helsinki ; † December 2, 2013 in Jeeser near Greifswald ) was a figure in German-speaking foreign fencing and German-Finnish cultural exchange.

Life

Between 1952 and 1960, Kaija Menger studied German and Slavic studies first in Helsinki and later in Leipzig . The defining personality of her German studies, which she graduated with a diploma in 1960, was Hans Mayer . In 1963 she took over the Finnish editing position at the Nordic Institute of the University of Greifswald , where she completed a contrastive-linguistic dissertation in 1976 as a Dr. phil. in the field of fencing . Contrastive phraseology and German-Finnish lexicography were among Menger's central areas of work . Numerous translators, interpreters, fenists and regional scholars have learned to love the Finnish language and Finland through the committed work of the "Greifswalder Finn" . Menger continued her scientific work after her retirement in 1997. In connection with research groups in Helsinki under the direction of the German specialist Jarmo Korhonen , she was able to contribute her lexicographical and phraseological expertise to various dictionary publications. Most recently she was the main author of the German-Finnish large dictionary published by WSOY in Helsinki in 2008.

For many decades Kaija Menger has been very committed to cultural exchange between Germany and Finland. She is a co-founder of the German-Finnish Society (DFG) in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and has been the backbone of the DFG's cultural work in northeast Germany for many years. Her name is inextricably linked with the Nordic Sound Festival , which she initiated in 1991 together with her Danish, Norwegian and Swedish lecturers and representatives of urban cultural work. Over the years Menger, through her contacts with the Sibelius Academy , the twin town of Kotka and other important institutions, made decisive contributions when it came to representing Finland at the festival. For her commitment she was honored with an honorary membership of the festival association. Representatives of the Republic of Finland have thanked Menger for their work on numerous occasions and emphasized its importance. In 1984 the Finnish President honored her with the Knight's Cross First Class of the Order of the Lion of Finland .

She was married to the historian Manfred Menger .
