The Kaiserpassage was the first shopping arcade in the Ruhr area and the only one in Wanne-Eickel , in today's Herne . It existed from 1912 to the end of the 1920s on Mozartstrasse in today's Wanne .

history

At the end of the 19th century, shopping streets with roofs, so-called passages, came into fashion in German cities for the first time. After these constructions already made cityscapes such as those of Berlin , Frankfurt am Main or Hamburg in Germany , wealthy citizens of Wanne-Eickel decided to build a shopping mall in their city as well. After all, from 1904 onwards, numerous residential and commercial buildings with Art Nouveau facades were built along Mozartstrasse . After the first shops moved into the street, a glass roof was put on the street after a total of eight years of construction, so that the first shopping mall in the Ruhr area was completed. The as yet unnamed shopping mall was given the name Kaiserpassage, as the elegant street led directly to what was then the Kaisergarten .

Over time, however, the roof of the expensive shopping street fell victim to coal soot and pigeon droppings and the shopping street darkened as a result. Since cleaning at that time would have been very time-consuming, it was seen as unprofitable and at the end of the 1920s the builder had the roof torn down so that the Kaiserpassage no longer existed; however, Mozartstrasse was retained. To this day, the Kaiserpassage was the only shopping arcade in both Wanne and Herne-Eickel .
