Location and architecture

The Kaiserstöckl is located at Hietzinger Hauptstrasse 1A in the northwest corner of the Schönbrunn Palace Park next to the Hietzinger Tor park entrance and opposite the Parkhotel Schönbrunn . The distance to Schönbrunn Palace is 700 meters.

The three-storey baroque building is divided into three by the side risalite that protrudes towards the street side over a curve, as it were as an independent structure . A small courtyard of honor is formed together with the lateral, single-storey porches . A central projection emerges slightly on the park side. Here a balcony is attached to four mighty consoles . The building has eleven window axes in the longitudinal front and five on the side. The first floor has large arched windows with triangular and round gable roofs . The parts of the building have hip roofs . Extensive stucco decorations on the walls and ceilings of the rooms have been preserved from the time it was built .

history

Maria Theresia bought the old grinding mill at the entrance to Hietzing in 1751, within sight of the Maria Hietzing pilgrimage church . After the mill was demolished, she had a palace built for her personal physician Gerard van Swieten from 1754 . After his death it served as a hostel for ministers and state guests, including State Chancellor Count Kaunitz , Prince Metternich and Otto von Bismarck .

In August 1833, Carola von Wasa-Holstein-Gottorp , who later became the wife of King Albert I of Saxony and thus Queen of Saxony, was born in Kaiserstöckl.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Schönbrunn park director resided in the building now known as the "Gartendirektorstöckl". In 1919 its rooms were confiscated by force by workers 'councils in order to accommodate the Hietzingen district workers' council . The judicial clearance took five years. At the end of the 1920s, the Hietzingen post office moved into the low-rise building on Kaiserstöckl and is still there today. A branch of a Swiss chocolate manufacturer is located in the second low-rise building and other rooms.

The Kaiserstöckl building has been preserved in almost its original condition. The porches were built around 1810. After a minor renovation in 1820, it was restored in the 1990s. From 2011 to 2013 a general refurbishment took place "taking into account the greatest possible consideration of the original substance".
