Kaj Kleist

Kaj Henning Peter Kleist (born November 11, 1943 in Qaqortoq ) is a Greenlandic teacher and civil servant .

Life

Kaj Kleist is the son of Pastor Rink Kleist (1912–1977) and his wife Asê Lund (1909–2002). His grandparents are the poet Josva Kleist (1879–1938) and his wife Bolethe Marie Ingeborg Chemnitz (1888–1957), daughter of the pastor Jens Chemnitz (1853–1929), as well as the poet Henrik Lund (1875–1948) and his wife Karoline Malene Justine Haldora Egede (1877–1979). He himself married the teacher Else Hansen (* 1950) on July 29, 1971. The two sons Mininnguaq Kleist (* 1973) and Malik Kleist (* 1977) emerged from the marriage.

Kaj Kleist completed his teacher training at Grønland's seminarium in 1973 . He then worked as a teacher in Vordingborg (1973–1974), Nuuk (1974–1976) and Tasiilaq (1976–1978). Then he was employed at Denmark's Teachers' College until 1980. From 1982 to 1988 he was school inspector in Qaqortoq. From 1989 to 1990 he was head of Sulisartut Højskoliat . He then left the school system and was director of culture, education and labor for the Greenland government from 1990 to 1991. From 1992 to 1999 he was government director. From 1999 to 2001 he was Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then Director of Parliament and from 2003 again Director of Government. In early 2008 he was appointed head of the Prime Minister's department but retired that same year.

Kaj Kleist was chairman of Siumut in Denmark from 1979 to 1980 , party secretary of Siumut from 1981 to 1982 and chairman of Siumut in Qaqortoq from 1983 to 1988. On September 29, 1995 he received the Nersornaat in silver. In 2005 Kajs Grønlandskrønike came out, a historical-biographical book written by Susanne Christiansen from the point of view of Kaj Kleist.
