The Kaladien ( Caladium ) form a genus of plants from the family of the Arumaceae (Araceae).
The genus Caladium comprises about seven species that are originally native to tropical South and Central America. Since the late 18th century, the species Caladium bicolor ( Buntwurz ) has been bred in Europe and North America. Before the Second World War, over 1000 varieties were known.
description
Caladium species and varieties are perennial herbaceous plants . You have tubers as a permanent organ. The basal, stalked leaves are shield, arrow or lanceolate.
In at least one species ( Caladium steudneriifolium ) the variegation of the leaves seems to serve as a mimicry to protect against predators.
Caladiums are single sexed ( monoecious ). The inflorescences typical of the Araceae are formed: with male and female flowers in a flask surrounded by a spathe .
