Kalinga Prize

The Kalinga Prize for the Popularization of Science (in short: Kalinga Prize; English Kalinga Prize for the Popularization of Science ) is a UNESCO award since 1952. It is awarded for significant contributions to the popularization of science exclusively to natural persons who have an excellent career as a scientist or as a writer , editor or film producer .

In the first few years the award was given annually. The prize will be awarded every two years from 2009. The prize money is US $ 20,000 (as of 2017) and is provided by the Kalinga Foundation Trust , based in Bhubaneswar , India. The foundation goes back to a donation from Biju Patnaik ( Bijayananda Patnaik , 1916–1997) in 1951. Since 2010, the foundation has also been awarding a national Kalinga Samman for Popularization of Science, which is endowed with 100,000 rupees .

The award bears the name of the ancient Indian kingdom of Kalinga . The asteroid (26214) Kalinga was again named after the Kalinga Prize.
