Kalki Koechlin (born January 10, 1984 in Pondicherry ) is an Indian film actress of French descent.

Life

Koechlin's French parents, Joel and Françoise, settled in India in the 1970s as supporters of the Sri Aurobindo movement . Koechlin grew up in a village near the city of Pondicherry in southern India. After completing elementary school, she attended the Hebron School in Ooty . She then traveled to England to study dramaturgy and theater at Goldsmiths, University of London . After successfully completing her studies in London, she traveled to Mumbai . From 2011 to 2015 she was married to the director, screenwriter and film producer Anurag Kashyap .

Koechlin is a public advocate for gender equality and against prostitution in India . She speaks English, Hindi , French and Tamil , the language of her birthplace. One of her ancestors is the designer of the Eiffel Tower , Maurice Koechlin .

Career

In Mumbai, Koechlin was invited to audition with her future husband Anurag Kashyap for the film Dev.D and accepted for the role of a prostitute . She received a lot of praise from viewers and critics for her acting performance in this film. Eighteen months later, she starred in the Kashyap-produced film Shaitan , which became a commercial success. She wrote the screenplay for the film That Girl in Yellow Boots and played the leading role. She is now one of the most famous actresses in India.
