Kallithea ( Greek Καλλιθέα ( f. Sg. )) Is a municipality in the northeast of the Greek Dodecanese island of Rhodes and comprises about one twelfth of the island's land area. The main town with 2836 inhabitants is Kalythies .

Administrative division

Kallithea formed an independent municipality until the administrative reform in 2010 and has since had the status of a municipality. The former municipal districts form urban districts or a local community.

Kallithea thermal baths

Since the time of the Roman Emperor Augustus , Kallithea has been known for its nearby thermal baths , which are said to have been visited by Augustus when he retired to Rhodes .

The thermal baths of Kallithea are located south of the coastal town and seen from the island's capital, Rhodes City , in front of the touristic north bay of Faliraki . A winding stretch of the coastal road descends into a small forest towards the sea. The bus also stops here. Directly south of the thermal baths is a narrow beach that can be reached through a forest.

Today's thermal baths

Today's thermal baths in romantic oriental style were inaugurated on July 1, 1929 after two years of construction under Italian rule. Before the Second World War , the facility was used as a thermal bath, but it was largely destroyed in bombing. At the sulphurous, warm springs, which are currently dry, rheumatism and diseases such as kidney and bladder problems or chronic constipation were cured. The sulphurous water from the dried up spring had a laxative effect.

The thermal facility was renovated over the years and reopened in summer 2007. Since then, the park (architecture by the Italian architect Pietro Lombardi ) has become more attractive again.

Diving

There is a diving school in the thermal baths . There is a stone and concrete slab bathing area for swimming in the sea. The water here is clear and also good for snorkeling, but the seabed can only be reached for a few meters from the shore by normal snorkelers, as the seabed drops off steeply here.

Film set

Several films were shot in the thermal baths, such as “Vacation on Rhodes” from the British crime series “The Adventures of Hercule Poirot ” and the feature film “ The Cannons of Navarone ” with Anthony Quinn .
