Kalmar Cathedral

The Kalmar Cathedral is a church building in the southern Swedish city of Kalmar . It was built between 1660 and 1699 according to plans by the architect Nicodemus Tessin the Elder. Ä. built.

history

In the middle of the 17th century, the town of Kalmar was relocated to the island of Kvarnholmen for reasons of fortification . The city was laid out according to a regular, right-angled floor plan, the center of which was the (main) square ( Stortorget ) with the newly built cathedral .

Construction began in 1660 under King Karl X. Gustav . After his death, King Charles XI. construction continued; King Charles XII. finally inaugurated it in 1703.

Building design

The cathedral as the main church of the Lutheran monastery (here synonymous with the diocese or superintendent ) Kalmar was built according to plans by the leading Swedish architect of the time, Nicodemus Tessin the Elder. Ä., Designed. It is a central building in the shape of a cross with apses in the east and west and four towers in the inner corners of the cross. The broad front is adapted to the broad market.

The baroque building is a successful synthesis of Jesuit -influenced and Protestant ideas of church building.

In contrast to numerous other baroque churches, Kalmar Cathedral has no dome. Originally, the central section was to have a low dome. Renovation plans in the 19th century that provided for a higher dome were not implemented.

The arch in the middle of the cross is 23 meters high.

Furnishing

altar

altar

The baroque altar , built in 1712 according to plans by Nicodemus Tessins the Elder, is well worth seeing . J. , which it designed in 1704, was created. This thus completed his father's work. A dove symbolizing the Holy Spirit can be seen in the corona. Below this is a scene from the story of creation: God separates darkness from light.

The altarpiece was created by Caspar Schröder. The altarpiece is probably by David von Krafft and shows Christ being deposed from the cross.

The Latin inscription above the altar table is 3:16 from the Gospel of John. The table is shaped like a sarcophagus ; Victory signs ( laurel wreath , palm branches) are attached to the front . The crucifix on the altar table is made in the Italian baroque style. It was donated to the cathedral in 1930.

At the side of the altar are sculptures from the 18th century: Faith (with cross and cup) on the left and grace (with cornucopia and the flame of the Pentecostal miracle) on the right.

pulpit

pulpit

The pulpit was made by Baltazar Hoppenstedt in the middle of the 17th century and is the oldest piece of furniture in the cathedral. It was transferred from the large church, which was located next to Kalmar Castle until the 1670s, to the cathedral. The carvings show the passion of Christ.

The sound cover has three floors and shows the risen man with the victory flag and surrounded by sleeping soldiers. The middle floor shows angels carrying instruments of torture; women with oil jugs are depicted in the corners. The lower paragraph shows some allegorical female figures, which among other things symbolize wisdom, strength and motherly love.

Moses functions as the pulpit bearer.

chandelier

In the middle of the cathedral hangs an ore chandelier made in Lübeck in 1682 with 36 arms. It is crowned by the Kalmar coat of arms.

The other chandeliers also date from the 17th century.

baptism

The baptismal font in the choir is made of limestone and has the shape of a ship. It was made by Erik Sand.
