The Kamaldulenserkirche (Pol. Kościół Kamedulów ) or Assumption Church (Pol. Kościół Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny ) or Bielany Church (Pol. Kościół na Bielanach ) in Krakow is a Catholic church at al. Konarowa 1 in the Bielany district on the Silberberg .
history
The Marshal of the Crown Mikołaj Wolski brought the Camaldolese to Krakow in 1603, where they founded a hermitage in 1604 on the Silberberg in the Wolski Forest . The monastery and church were built between 1610 and 1630 in the early baroque style. From 1604 the construction work was carried out by Valentin von Säbisch from Wroclaw . However, after its church building collapsed, Andrea Spezza from Ticino was commissioned to continue the construction from 1610 . Artists such as Giovanni Battista Falconi and Tommaso Dolabella were also involved in the construction. The inauguration took place in 1642. Later Wenaty von Subiaco and Michał Stachowicz also delivered their works for the church. The donor was buried at the main entrance. In the crypt are the mummified corpses of the monastery brothers. According to the rules of the Camaldolese, only men are allowed to enter the church. Women are only allowed access on a few festive days per year. In 1963 the church was given the rank of minor basilica . Since the church is not far from the John Paul II Airport in Kraków-Balice , warning lights were placed on the spiers at the beginning of the 21st century.
