The World God Only Knows ( Japanese 神 の み ぞ 知 る セ カ イ , Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai , dt. "The world that only God knows"), often abbreviated to Kaminomi ( 神 の み ), is a manga series by Tamiki Wakaki is written and drawn. From April 2008 to April 2014, the series was published in Shōnen Sunday magazine . An adaptation as a light novel series of the same name followed in 2009. Further adaptations as an anime television series, here with English subtitles The World God Only Knows , which were created in the animation studio Manglobe under the direction of Shigehito Takayanagi , followed from 2010 to 2013.

action

Keima Katsuragi ( 桂 木 桂 馬 , Katsuragi Keima ) is a second year student of high school and a fanatical gamer of Galgēs (games with pretty girls, often Ren'ai adventure or Ren'ai simulations ). In the Internet he is known under the name Otoshi-gami ( 落 と し 神 , dt. "The God of Conquest"), because he is able to seduce every female character within these games. In everyday school life, however, it looks completely different and he is nicknamed “nerd glasses” ( オ タ メ ガ ネ , Otamegane , a suitcase word from Otaku and Megane ), which is meant derogatory.

One day he receives an email offering him a contract to “conquer girls”. When he confirms this, however, he still only thinks about his games. In reality, however, he signed the contract with the demon Elsea de Lute Irma ( エ リ ュ シ ア ・ デ ・ ル ー ト ・ イ ー マ ), nicknamed Elsie ( エ ル シ ィ , Erushi ) and hell. She is not angry as suspected, but is supposed to capture so-called "escape souls" (Japanese kaketama or white) who are hiding in the hearts of girls and waiting to be reborn as their children. The only way to get this out of there, however, is that the girl has to fall in love with a boy, which closes the gaps in her heart and leaves no more room for the souls. Keima is not at all enthusiastic about the idea and the misunderstanding, since he has never seduced a real girl, let alone was willing to do so at all. However, a collar that appears with the contract forces him to do so, which would behead him in the event of a breach of contract.

Stuck in this inescapable situation, Keima tries to apply the experience he has gained in games to reality, which is repeatedly used to parody the typical clichés of games and the stereotypes of anime characters. At the same time, the relationship between Keima and Elsie is being pursued, who now also goes to school and pretends to be his half-sister.

Origin and publications

The manga Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai is written and drawn by the Japanese mangaka Tamiki Wakaki . A first chapter comprehensive forerunner was Shōnen Sunday in the 32nd edition 2007 under the title Koishite !? Kami-sama !! ( 恋 し て!? 神 様 !! ) released. The actual series began on April 9, 2008 in the same magazine published by Shogakukan and ended on April 23, 2014 in issue 21/2014 of the magazine. From this series a total of 26 summaries of the chapters appeared - in the manga itself referred to as a flag , which in the games themed by the plot means a state variable based on the decisions of the player that has an influence on the further plot - as tankōbon .

Volumes 17 and 18 were unusually published at the same time and also appeared as a double set with the art book Every Lovely Angel , which contains, among other things, the cover for the series of Shōnen Sunday and the anthologies in double size.

In South Korea the series was licensed through Haksan Culture , where the first two volumes were published in August 2009. A German translation was published by Egmont Manga between November 2011 and June 2016 .

On September 10, 2014, a spin-off called Kami Nomi zo Shiru Sekai: On The Train ( 神 の み ぞ 知 る セ カ イ on the train) was announced that Shogakukan's web manga magazine Club Sunday would appear on September 19 . In terms of content, this will combine the characters from the manga with a train theme, especially since most of the female characters are named after train stops of the Kintetsu railway company.

Adaptations

Light novel

An adaptation of the manga as a light novel series is written by Mamizu Arisawa . Meanwhile, the illustrations come from the author of the manga Tamiki Wakaki . The first edition was published on May 19, 2009 ISBN 978-4-09-451137-6 and the second on May 18, 2010 ISBN 978-4-09-451203-8 also by Shogakukan under the imprint Gagaga Bunko . Two editions of this were published.

Anime

Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai

Directed by Shigehito Takayanagi and based on a script by Hideyuki Kurata based on the plot of the manga, the animation studio Manglobe filmed Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai in 2010. The character design is by Akio Watanabe . The background music was composed and arranged by Hayato Matsuo . A prologue to the series was published on September 17, 2010 with the limited version of the 10th manga volume.

The first broadcast of the first season took place from October 7 to December 23, 2010 in the night of (and thus on the previous television day ) to parallel on the Japanese television station TV Tokyo , which was also involved in the production and TV Setouchi . Half an hour later it was broadcast on TV Hokkaido . A few days later, TV Aichi , TV Osaka and TVQ Kyushu also began broadcasting. The season extends over the first two manga volumes and is divided into several story arcs: Episode 1 is about Ayumi Takahara and corresponds to the first manga chapter; episodes 2 and 3, each divided into two separate chapters, about Mio Aoyama based on the manga chapters 2 to 5; Episode 4 with a side story on Manga Chapter 17 (Volume 3); episodes 5 and 7 on Kanon Nakagawa on chapters 7 through 10; Episodes 8 on chapters 11 and 12; episodes 9 to 11 about Shiori Shiomiya on chapters 13 to 16; and the last episode on the manga chapter 6.

Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai II

The second season started on April 12, 2011 on TV Tokyo and ran through June 28, 2011 with 12 episodes. TV Aichi followed with a half-hour delay and within a week TVQ Kyushu, TV Setouchi, TV Hokkaido and TV Osaka. From April 18, AT-X followed nationwide via satellite. This season also contains several story arcs, this time mainly from volumes 3 to 5: episodes 1 and 2 are about Kusunoki Kasuga based on manga chapters 18 to 22; Episodes 3 and 4 about Haqua based on chapters 22 through 26; Episodes 5 to 7 about Chihiro Kosaka on chapters 28 to 32; Episode 8 with two side stories on chapters 33 and 27; Episodes 9 through 11 about Jun Nagase on chapters 36 through 41; and the final episode is a side story based on Chapter 75 of Volume 8.

Both series were streamed worldwide on Crunchyroll on the same day (due to the different time zones nominally the day before) as their Japanese premiere on TV Tokyo in an English subtitled version .

Both seasons were sold from January to December 2011 on 12 Blu-Rays (each in a normal and a limited version) and DVD. However, the sales figures were below expectations, so the Blu-Rays by Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai II only sold about 2000 times in the respective first week of publication. In the US they appeared on Sentai Filmworks .

Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai: Megami-hen

Due to the sales figures, a third season was originally no longer planned and the production staff was dissolved. In December 2012, however, the production of a third television season called Megami-hen was announced.

The director took Satoshi Osedo and Akio Watanabe was as a character designer Toshie Kawamura supported. The 12 episode season ran from July 9 to September 24, 2013 after midnight first on TV Tokyo, followed later by TV Osaka, TV Setouchi, TVQ Kyūshū, TV Hokkaidō and TV Aichi. An English subtitled simulcast ran on Crunchyroll and for the US video market it was acquired by Sentai Filmworks.

The third season covers the "goddess cycle" of the manga, i.e. H. Chapter 114 from Volume 13 to Chapter 189 from Volume 19.

OVAs

In addition, OVAs were produced that were included as a bonus in individual limited manga volumes. The first OVA 4-nin to Idol ( 4 人 と ア イ ド ル , Yonin to Aidoru ) was included in the limited version of the 14th manga volume from September 16, 2011. She tells a side story to Chihiro, Ayumi and Kanon, based on chapters 54 and 55 from Manga volume 6.

The plot of the second season was continued with the second OVA Tenri-hen ( 天理 編 ) which were added in two parts on October 18 and December 18, 2012 to the limited 19th and 20th volume. These deal with Tenri Ayukawa and are based on Volume 7 or Chapters 57 to 65.

The limited volume 22 of June 18, 2013 was added another OVA spinoff about Kanon called Magical Star Kanon-chan 100% ( マ ジ カ ル ☆ ス タ ー か の ん 100% ), which was an adaptation of the volume 12 of the accompanying extra short story.

The OVAs were also licensed in North America from Sentai Filmworks.
