The Kamieńczyk hut ( Schronisko Kamieńczyk in Polish , formerly Zackelfallbaude ) is located at an altitude of 830  m npm in the Polish part of the Giant Mountains , a mountain range of the Sudetes . It is named after the Polish name for the Zackelfall (pl. Wodospad Kamieńczyka ), which is located in the immediate vicinity.

history

Decisive for the construction of the first hostel on the Zackelfall was the popularity of the waterfall and the Zackelklamm gorge below it ( pl.Wąwóz Kamieńczyka ) as one of the preferred tourist destinations for visitors to the area around the then Prussian Schreiberhau (since 1945 Szklarska Poręba in Polish ). Already John Quincy Adams , who later became President of the United States, visited the two natural wonders and noted in his travelogue "Letters on Silesia" ( Letters on Silesia ) from 1 August 1800:

In order to have an easy day's work, we decided to leave it at the inspection of the Zackenfall for today. […] The location of this waterfall is just as wild and romantic as that which the Kochel forms, and at least three times as high; which is nearly a hundred and fifty feet. As in various other places in this region, some violent natural occurrence seems to have split the rocks and produced these considerable gaps which yawn at the wanderer from so many high-lying areas. "

- John Quincy Adams

In the years 1888–1890, a convenient access from Schreiberhau to the gorge was created and continued to the small accommodation that was built around 1872 together with a restoration above the waterfall. In the years 1923 to 1924 this hostel, which already bore the name "Zackelfallbaude", was considerably expanded to a large mining hut under the owner at the time, Franz Adolph . This was made possible by the rapid development that winter sports had taken in the Giant Mountains. A modern bobsleigh run and a ski jump were built right next to the hut .

After the Second World War , the inn was converted into a guard station for the border guard armies and renamed Kamieńczyk in Polish . During an extensive renovation in 1984, a fire broke out, which destroyed the entire building.

The following year, the current owners began to revive the place for tourists. At first, the modest gastronomic offer consisted of the sale of simple meals in a small tea room. The forced state management of real socialism prevented further development of tourism based on private sector engagement. It was not until the turn of 1989 and the end of the Communist People's Republic of Poland that the conditions were created that enabled the construction of the first private hostel in the Polish mountains after the war in 1995.

Hiking and cycling routes

The hostel can be reached via different routes:
- The hut is located on the red marked Sudeten main hiking trail , which can be reached either directly from the city center in Szklarska Poręba or via various branch routes.
- A black signposted hiking trail, which leads past the valley station of the Reifträger cable car, offers the opportunity to get to the hostel at a crossroads on a well-paved path through the gorge; otherwise you will come to the “Zackelfall Crossing” (pl. Rozdroże pod Kamieńczykiem ). From here the main hiking trail continues uphill, past the Zackelfallbaude, to the mountain hotel Schronisko na Hali Szrenickiej .
Another alternative is the supply road to the hut. The approximately 1.8 km long route with an altitude difference of around 80 meters can be tackled in a few minutes by bike.
