The Mieczysław-Orłowicz- Sudeten main hiking trail ( pol . Główny Szlak Sudecki imienia Mieczysława Orłowicza , "GSS" ) is a red-marked long-distance hiking trail in Poland that leads from Świeradów-Zdrój to Prudnik through the most interesting parts of the Sudetes .

history

On October 24, 1947, the Sudeten Commission of the Polish Tatra Association determined the route of the hiking trail. The marking work started a year later. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of tourism in Poland in 1973, the Mountain Hiking Commission of the Polish Tourism and Regional Studies Association named the main Sudeten hiking trail after Mieczysław Orłowicz , in recognition of his contribution to tourism and local history .

The route of the hiking trail has changed over the years. It currently begins in Świeradów-Zdrój , leads through the Jizera Mountains ( Wysoka Kopa , 1126 m; Wysoki Kamień , 1058 m) to Szklarska Poręba , then through the Giant Mountains ( Zackelfall , High Wheel - 1509 m, the mountain pass under the Snezka ( Przełęcz pod Śnieżką - 1389 m)) to Karpacz ; further stages are the Landeshuter Kamm (Skalnik, 945 m) to Krzeszów , the Steinsgebirge ( Góry Kamienne ) and the Black Mountains ( Góry Czarne ) to Jedlina-Zdrój , the Owl Mountains ( Wielka Sowa , 1015 m), the Silberberg Pass , which takes you from the Warthagebirge separates. Further, through Wambierzyce , the hiking trail leads into the Heuscheuergebirge and the Sudeten health resorts: Kudowa-Zdrój , Duszniki-Zdrój ; then through the Eagle Mountains and Habelschwerdter Mountains , the Wilczki waterfall, the Glatzer Schneegebirge , the Kühberge ( Krowiarki ), Lądek-Zdrój , the Reichensteiner Mountains to Paczków (here it ended for many years at the train station) and on through Kalkau ( Kałków ), Głuchołazy , the Zuckmanteler Uplands to Prudnik . The trail bypasses some important Sudetic points, including the peaks of Schneekoppe and Glatzer Schneeberg .

The length of the hiking trail is about 440 km and corresponds to about 104 hours.

Mountain hiking

The hiking trail is available all year round, but some sections can be closed due to the risk of avalanches (Giant Mountains) and dangerous swamps (Heuscheuergebirge). There are many mountain huts managed by the PTTK (Polish Tourist Association) . The Polish mountain huts are obliged to accommodate anyone who cannot find another place before sunset or in an emergency, under simple conditions.
