The Polskie Towarzystwo Tatrzańskie - PTT ( German  Polish Tatra Society ) is a Polish mountain association founded in 1873, newly founded in 1981 and registered in 1989 .

history

The idea of founding a mountain association in the Tatra Mountains was discussed as early as 1871. The association was initially founded on December 31, 1873 with its headquarters in Nowy Targ as Galicyjskie Towarzystwo Tatrzańskie (German: Galizische Tatra-Gesellschaft), but already at the first general meeting in May 1874 it was renamed Towarzystwo Tatrzańskie (German: Tatra-Gesellschaft) and after Relocated to Krakow .

The aims of the statutes were:

  • The exploration of the Carpathian Mountains , especially the Tatras and the Pienines, as well as the dissemination of the knowledge gained.
  • The promotion of tourism and infrastructure in the Carpathian Mountains, especially the Tatras and the Pienines.
  • Protection of nature and the animals of the Tatras, especially chamois and marmots .
  • Promotion of all kinds of mountain farming.

The founding members were Tytus Chałubiński , Józef Stolarczyk , Eugeniusz Janota , Ludwik Eichborn , Walery Eljasz-Radzikowski and others. The first chairman was Count Mieczysław Rey . Immediately after it was founded, regional associations outside the Tatra Mountains were established in Stanisławów , Kołomyja , Lemberg , Nowy Sącz , Szczawnica and Żywiec . The club thus entered into competition with the Beskydy Club , which was also active in Galicia. From 1886 the association published the association newspaper Pamiętnik Towarzystwa Tatrzańskiego (German: Diary of the Tatra Society).

In 1882 the association moved into its new association building, the Tatra train station in Zakopane. At the end of the 19th century, the association obtained the extension of the Kraków- Chabówka railway line to Zakopane, the creation of marked hiking trails and shelters, the exploration of caves and the surveying of mountains and lakes in the Tatras, the Czarnohora , the Łemkowszczyzna and the Silesian Beskydy and the publication of mountain guides. In Zakopane the association supported the installation of sidewalks, street lighting, the post office and the telegraph station.

At the beginning of the 20th century, different departments were created: Tourism (1903), Skiers (1907), Friends of Nature (1910), Folklore (1911), Nature Conservation (1912) and Friends of Zakopane (1914). The association campaigned for the establishment of the Tatra mountain rescue service TOPR in 1909.

After the First World War , the association was renamed Polskie Towarzystwo Tatrzańskie in 1920 . The association expanded its activities to the entire territory of the Second Polish Republic . The head office was in the Tatra Railway Station in Zakopane. In 1939 the PTT had 54 mountain huts, 81 tourist hostels, 10 shelters, with a total of approx. 5000 overnight accommodations.

After the German attack on Poland , the PTT ceased its activities. After 1945 he took it up again. However, the bourgeois association was a thorn in the side of the Soviet occupying power. The PTT and the Polish National Studies Society were therefore forcibly dissolved on December 16, 1950. On December 17, 1950, the Polskie Towarzystwo Turystyczno-Krajoznawcze was founded, which took over the assets of the dissolved associations.

In 1981, an association of the same name was founded in Kraków, but it was not until 1989 that it was entered in the association register. The new PTT sees itself as the legal successor to the association that was dissolved in 1950.
