He researched the influence of the Tatra mountain climate on the treatment of diseases, especially in the field of lung diseases. The development of Zakopane as a health resort in the second half of the 19th century is largely due to him. With Sabała he made numerous mountain climbs in the Tatras, the flora of which he studied intensively.

Chałubiński was buried in the Cemetery of Honor in Zakopane . In 1901 a first monument was erected for him in Zakopane. Two years later, a joint monument designed by Stanisław Witkiewicz was set up for him and Sabała in Zakopane. Some of the Tatra plant species he discovered were named after him, such as B. the algae species Peridinium chalubinskii and Chalubinskia tatrica . The Wrota Chałubińskiego mountain pass in the High Tatras also bears his name, as does the city hospital in Zakopane and numerous roads throughout Poland.
