The Cmentarz Zasłużonych na Pęksowym Brzyzku , also called Stary cmentarz na Pęksowym Brzyzku , is the oldest cemetery in Zakopane and was established around 1850. Its name can be translated as the cemetery of the deserving on the Pęksy slope or the old cemetery on the Pęksy slope. The cemetery is named after Jan Pęksy, who donated the land for the cemetery.

history

In 1847 the wooden church of Our Lady of Czestochowa was built as a cemetery church. The cemetery was laid out around the same time. There are around 500 graves in the cemetery, and around 250 important people are buried there, in particular clergy, spa doctors, artists, writers, musicians, mountain guides, mountaineers, winter sports enthusiasts, but also alpinists who have died in the Tatras . Most of the graves are decorated with elaborate wood carvings from the Zakopan school from the turn of the last century. The cemetery is protected as a cultural monument. Since the First World War, only people have been buried in the cemetery who have a family grave there or who have earned money for the city of Zakopane.

location

The cemetery is located in the center of Zakopane. The main Krupówki shopping street and the lower station of the funicular to Gubałówka Mountain are in the immediate vicinity .
