The Hohe Rad ( Polish : Wielki Szyszak , Czech : Vysoké Kolo ) is at 1509  m after Schneekoppe , Hochwiesenberg and Brunnberg the fourth highest mountain in the Giant Mountains and the highest point in the western part of the mountain range. The state border between Poland and the Czech Republic runs across the summit .

Location and surroundings

Directly on the summit is the widely visible, dilapidated monument of Kaiser Wilhelm I. On the northwest shoulder, directly on the edge of the snow pits (Polish: Śnieżne Kotły ) is the striking former snow pit hut (Schronisko nad Śnieżnymi Kotłami) , which is now used as a television and Radio transmitter as well as serves as a meteorological station. The Martinsbaude ( Martinova bouda ), one of the traditional mining towns of the Giant Mountains, is located directly below the southern flank . To the west - at a distance of about two kilometers - is the headwaters of the Elbe in a wide raised bog .

On the south side of the Czech Republic ( Bohemia ) the mountain gradually slopes down to the bottom of the Elbe ( Labský důl ). On the Polish north side ( Silesia ), the Hohe Rad has extensive sloping scree slopes , predominantly overgrown with lichen, and a steep fall into the snow pits, some of which have vertical rock faces 150 meters high.

Paths to the summit

The Polish-Czech Friendship Path along the main ridge ( Kammweg ) leads north below the summit for nature conservation reasons . There was a small junction 300 meters west of the summit on the Freundsweg. This path has been closed since 2009 and access is no longer possible.
