Kamioka ( Japanese 神 岡 町 , - chō ) was the name of a city in Gifu Prefecture in Japan until 2004 , when it was merged with the community of Furukawa and the villages of Miyagawa and Kawai to form the city of Hida . The city became known for the Kamioka Neutrino Observatory located there.

Kamioka Neutrino Observatory (Kamioka Observatory)

The neutrino observatory is attached to the former Mozumi mine, since neutrino experiments are ideally carried out deep underground. This reduces the background radiation (e.g. cosmic radiation ) to an acceptable minimum. The experiments performed include the Kamioka Nucleon Decay Experiment ( KamiokaNDE ) and its successor, Super-Kamiokande . Another experiment is the KamLAND detector, which has been working since 2002 , which is intended to provide evidence of neutrino oscillation and the MSW effect by detecting artificial neutrino sources (e.g. nuclear power plants ) . Gravitational wave detectors are also installed in the Kamioka observatory (CLIO for testing purposes of the technology used for frozen mirrors) or are being set up (KAGRA, a laser interferometer with an arm length of 3 km, expected to be in operation from 2018).
