Hida ( Japanese 飛 驒 市 , - shi ) is a city in the Japanese prefecture of Gifu on Honshū . The local specialties include the Kamioka Neutrino Observatory (with the Kamiokande and Super Kamiokande experiments ) in the former Mozumi mine and the KAGRA gravitational wave detector in the Kamioka mine.
history
Hida was founded in 2004 as an amalgamation of the communities Furukawa ( 古 川 町 , -chō ), Kamioka ( 神 岡 町 , -chō ) and the villages of Kawai ( 河 合 村 , -mura ) and Miyagawa ( 宮 川村 , -mura ) of Yoshiki County.

Spelling of the name
Since the second kanji is only present in its Shinjitai form in the Japanese character sets, in which the element 單 has been replaced by 単 , Hida is commonly written as 飛 騨 市 .
