Kanak Sprak - 24 discordant tones from the fringes of society is the title of a book with which its author Feridun Zaimoğlu was initially perceived as an "underground author " and "citizen fright of the German literary scene" before he won the jury's prize at the Ingeborg Bachmann Competition in 2003 for its German-language narrative skins was also recognized as a serious writer German. The title of the book today describes a corrupt German, with a simplified grammar, sound shifts and lots of Turkish and English sprinkles, but was by no means intended by the author. Zaimoğlu emphasizes that the "Kanaks" described in his book should not be confused with offspring from bourgeois circles who cultivated four-letter words and tried to offend the department store with beer can in hand.

The neologism comes from the name Kanaken . Germans gave immigrants and former guest workers , especially of Turkish and Arab descent, this disparagingly racist designation. By consciously using the term, young Turks confess their role as social outsiders: The abuse "Kanaken" and "Turkish German" are turned into positive in the sense of a Geusen word : a sign of belonging to a self-confident, aggressive "culture" between cultures ”.

“How is life as a Kanake in Germany?” Is the basic question of the semi-fictional interviews that the author wants to have “conducted” for his book. Ultimately, however, through the conversations condensed into 24 monologues with titles such as “You can never wipe the foreigner out of your face” and “Deutsches Land is ne salty Puffmutti”, Zaimoğlu delivers haunting portraits of people with a migration background “on the fringes of society”. In the “discrepancies” of these portrayed subjects, which the author calls them, there is caustic criticism of the situation in West Germany and of the way the state and its population deal with the immigrant society. Zaimoğlu's figures can - at least according to the author - be seen as harbingers of the beginning of a fundamental social change: “Analogous to the black-consciousness movement in the USA, the individual Kanak sub-identities are becoming increasingly aware of overarching contexts and content. Stage adaptations

Several theaters became aware of the dramatic power of Zaimoğlu's monologues and brought the monologues from Kanak Sprak to the stage - mostly in connection with monologues by young Turkish women from the follow-up band Koppstoff ; first Kampnagel in Hamburg and the Junge Theater Bremen . In 2005, Zaimoglu and his co-author Günter Senkel wrote the monologue piece Black Virgins , which in turn consists of interviews condensed into literary monologues - this time with young women in Germany who have converted to Islam . This piece was also edited and broadcast as a radio play by NDR .

In 1997, Deutschlandradio and Süddeutsche Rundfunk produced the author's dramaturgically adapted successful book as an original radio play entitled Kanak Sprak . Here acted as spokesman u. a. Ali Aksoy, Ole Peter Jeß, Aykut Kayacik, Mürtüz Yolcu and Feridun Zaimoğlu himself. The piece, which was staged in the manner of a radio documentary , was directed by Götz Naleppa . In some cases, the listeners also received the piece in the belief that it was an original collage.

Others

The multimedia success of the book meant that the book title became a catchphrase and is now sometimes even used as a kind of technical term for a certain migrant sociolect , which is a mixture of antiquated Turkish, German-English colloquial language and “the mostly excessive use of obscene Idioms with a high proportion of fecal expressions ”. A follow-up volume to Kanak Sprak is the book Koppstoff , which was also published in Turkey.

The book continued to inspire the Kanak Attak group .
