Black Virgins was created by Günter Senkel and Feridun Zaimoglu as a commissioned work by Şermin Langhoff for the theater festival beyond belonging - migration hoch zwei, developed and curated by her . As part of this festival, the world premiere took place on March 17, 2006 in the Hebbel am Ufer in Berlin . It was one of the "most discussed theater texts of 2006" and has been staged numerous times as well as radio plays. In March 2010 the world premiere was resumed after four years in Ballhaus Naunynstraße .

According to the authors, the theater text is based on pointed interviews that were conducted with “Neo-Muslim women”.

Leonhard Koppelmann adapted the piece as a radio play in 2007 and limited it to six episodes. The following spoke: Maren Eggert , Katharina Schubert , Iris Minich and Anne Weber .
